STATEMENT

My aim is to produce paintings that paint themselves, that self organise to generate surprising outcomes. I construct them using a technique I developed in 2000 while studying at  Birmingham City University formerly UCE. The method entails dropping paint into a fluid filled surface, I do not touch the canvas at all. These droplets form concentric circles as they enter the fluid and remain very discrete. Yet each droplet via the connecting fluid has an incremental effect upon the entire painting. Mirroring how the smallest movement of mass, via gravity, has a real but vanishingly small influence on everything else in the universe. As the work dries further self organisation occurs at an intricate level within the paint as gravity plays a direct role. The method is non interventionist and allows the paint to self organise producing delicate pattern beyond manual dexterity. Often these patterns and structures resemble those found in the natural environment, for example, animal and plant cells or mineral and crystal formations. These structures are both beautiful and intriguing to me because they are not open to manipulation. Thus I continue to experiment with this and other self organising painting methods to develop my practise and explore further.
